Some modifications to Odysseus this year
Poor fridge performance
Looking at the location of the compressor it was obvious that the heat off the compressor was going up all around the fridge so heating it up and that's why it was on all the time, remember the temp is 38c in the cabin. Also the fan that was suppose to "cool” the heat exchanger took the hot air that was inside the locker and passed it through the heat exchanger. The fix was to turn the fan around so it took air from the cabin sole and passed it through the heat exchanger, then block off all of the locker at the back of the compressor with insulation, then cut a hole in the front locker cover and fix another 3" computer fan in place that extracted the hot air off the compressor. The heat exchanger needs cleaning out every year as it get blocked with “fluff” Now the fridge runs for 12 minutes and is off for 55 minutes, a success. Fan needs cleaning each year.

Inverter
1 kilowatt inverter mounted under the chart table, near batteries and it’s easy to use. Easy to fit and very handy when you need a battery drill charged. I have boiled a 1 kilowatt kettle on it but you need the engine running, it runs my TV and any other 240 v equipment.

Solar panel
Solar panel 120 watt produces 9.2 amps in French sunshine, will keep batteries toped up even with the fridge on all the time. This was purchased from China for £145 and £50 delivery.

Electrolysis alarm
Marina’s are full of stray currents and can cause a lot of damage to any underwater metals, like props, skin fittings, sail drives. Works well and deal with any issues that arise. Some marinas are wired incorrectly as well. It tells me if it’s a 240v or 12v problem. I have found that power boats are a common problem.

Enclosure

Fitting the enclosure was the best thing we have done to the boat, it makes the cockpit into another room, and we sit up there most of the time. I had it made to my specifications so we had a lot of window space put in and made it so sides and back roll up and the whole thing folds back on it’s self during sailing.

Rope storage during sailing
I have made pockets in the dodgers and on the rail for the amidships ropes so we need not take them off during sailing.
